FAQs

  • A: Coaching is a non-therapeutic intervention intended for people who seek to enhance their performance or improve something in their lives (e.g., work, relationships, health). Counseling or psychotherapy is a therapeutic intervention that aims to diagnose and treat psychological disorders or dysfunctions.

  • A: Unfortunately, because coaching is not deemed a “health service,” it is treated differently than mental health services like psychotherapy or psychiatric treatment and can not be billed for insurance reimbursement.

  • A: For decades, psychologists focused on studying what goes ‘wrong’ with people so they could better treat psychological disorders. Positive Psychology, established as a new domain of psychology in 1998 by Martin Seligman, seeks to understand how things go ‘right’ with people. It is “the scientific and applied approach to uncovering people’s strengths and promoting their positive functioning” (Snyder et al., 2000).

I’ve been studying positive psychology since it’s early days (in 2000, when I came across it in my graduate studies), and have actively incorporated it into my clinical work and leadership throughout the last two decades.

  • A: I incorporate elements of evidence-based (behavioral, cognitive behavioral and humanistic) coaching approaches, including evidence-based positive psychology interventions. My work is informed by my clinical experience, and I take a positive, forward-focused, strengths-based approach.

  • A: For best results, in the early stage (first 1-2 months), it’s ideal to meet every week. If you choose to continue working with me, we can decide together if a different interval would be appropriate moving forward.

Once clients reach a certain level of goal attainment, you can check in with me monthly if you choose.

  • A: If you identify as someone who is smart, creative, and ambitious, but you just don’t know why you can’t make progress in “X” area, then I may be the right person for you. I’ve spent my entire career helping people JUST like you— and I also know firsthand how frustrating it can feel to not have your life match up to your dreams!

Also, if science + compassion sound like a nice combo to you, we might be a great match!

If you’re still not sure, book a free call with me and we can chat!

  • A: Even after reading all of this, you may be unsure. That’s ok. It’s why I offer a free consultation call so you can speak directly with me and ask any others questions you may have. If I think you’re not a good candidate for coaching (and perhaps may be better served with traditional psychotherapy or another kind of service), I will let you know!

  • A: According to the terms of the coaching agreement, you are free to end the coaching relationship without giving any reason.

What is Well-Being Coaching, anyway?

First we need to define what we mean by “well-being.” It is not simply feeling happy or good.

According to Seligman, the father of positive psychology, well-being theory has five core elements:

  1. Positive Emotion

  2. Engagement

  3. Meaning

  4. Positive Relationships

  5. Accomplishment

A Well-Being coach is a professional coach who takes a holistic approach to helping their clients live healthy, engaged, fulfilled lives. I also take a mind-body-spirit approach to well-being.

You can think of Well-Being Coaching as:

a process that helps you get clear on your own vision for holistic well-being.

A Well-Being Coach is an expert in the change process and is more of a mentor or guide.

They are not going to “fix you,” because they do not believe you are inherently broken.

They serve as skilled partners to help you make shifts in beliefs and behaviors to improve your overall well-being.

HOW I COACH

My style of coaching is strengths-based and compassionate, but I will gently challenge you if needed.

In coaching, you clarify your values, set goals and priorities, talk through challenges, and create your own vision. A coach provides the toolkit to enable you to do the work to reach your vision.

Keep in mind that, as with all coaching, the responsibility is yours to implement whatever action plan you choose with the help of your coach. However, a good coach will provide accountability and creative trouble-shooting when obstacles get in the way!
